Sigh. I have once again tried and failed to use the WordPress Block Editor, and humbly went back to good old Twenty Fifteen. I’m sure it’s really good for people who primarily need to make a website. But it doesn’t seem so well-suited to, you know, a blog, where dynamic content is front and centre and the theme is supposed to adapt to it, not the other way round. It is just a reflection of how people use WordPress nowadays, I guess.
However, I did implement a quick-and-dirty auto dark mode thanks to this post by Yihui Xie which uses CSS filters. It is as simple as:
@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) {
html, img, video, iframe {
filter: invert(1);
}
body {
background-color: white;
}
}
If you use dark mode, let me know if anything is wonky, but things should be usable at least.
I also slightly tweaked the colour and redid the sidebar a bit. I am hoping to reduce my dependence on the Jetpack plugin, so for a while now the link to subscribe by email has been a mailto link for rssby.email, instead of Jetpack’s built-in newsletter function.
As you can probably guess, I am trying to get back into blogging more regularly. The more I reflect on the state of social media and my own place in it, the more strongly I feel we, or at least I, should never have left the ocean the blogosphere.
P. S. For what it’s worth, the theme I was really trying to make work was Anders Norén’s lightweight theme Bjork. It seems perfectly nice, I just can’t get with the new way of things, I guess. But if you are handy with the Block Editor, maybe you should try it!
